Meeting with the big wigs

Got up at 5am today (ack!) and left the house around 6.15 to go to a meeting about our midwifery bill for the upcoming state legislative session. Met with the House Speaker Pro-tem, the House Majority Floor Leader, our House sponsoring Rep, and one Senator. The meeting went well; they are all legislators that have been supportive (the Floor Leader really put his neck on the line for us last year). It was good for them to get face to face with homebirth families from their districts, as well as those of us from the statewide organization.

I also got to see a dear friend who served us as a doula for our one hospital birth and ask her if, once we get midwives legal here, she would be willing to come the distance to our home. She said yes, for special friends. 🙂 So, prayerfully, our next Blessing (who isn’t on the way yet, btw) will get to be born legally and safely at home! /moose

Fiddlin’ with pics

Working on our family Christmas picture… (yes, I’ve given up, for now, on getting the 8 of us all looking at the camera on purpose!) I need to get a new pic of J and I. That one is not only blurry, but it’s about 25 pounds ago for me. 🙂

Having just finished re-reading Sheldon Vanauken’s A Severe Mercy, I am in deep-thinking mode. The following notes are friends-only, but even for my friends here, I’m not actually writing it for you… it’s all for my own thinking, and I know I won’t “lose it” if I put it here. So, you can read on if you want, but I’m really just talking to myself. EDIT: At length.

Culinary Note

I’ve known for years that Steel-Cut Oats are even healthier for you than “Old Fashioned” Oats, esp. because of their low glycemic idex (they help keep your blood sugar steady), but I hadn’t tried them until today.

Yummmy!

They have a great texture. Some of the creaminess of “regular” oatmeal, but with a bit of chewy, almost crunchy added in. Fabulous flavor and extremely filling.

It’s a good thing we all liked them – we bought 25# from the food co-op!

Note for any adventurers – plan plenty of time for cooking. Takes about 25-30 minutes if you haven’t soaked them (which we hadn’t). Tonight we’re going to try putting them in the crockpot before bed so they’ll be ready in time for breakfast instead of brunch tomorrow.

Input, please

I’m looking for ideas, and hoping that my vast lj readership might help me. 😉

We are working to help some friends of our with some serious marriage issues right now. They seem to be making progress, but I realized when I was talking to her the other day that they desperately need to learn to have fun together! They’re going to have to start small, and I’m trying to come up with fun ideas that don’t necessarily take a lot of time. If I get enough, I’d like to put them in a little jar – “Fun things we can do together in 15 minutes or less” – or something like that.

So… ideas?
